October Snow

Much too early than is good for anyone’s sanity, snow fell on Calgary.

Oh, and then after that, it snowed some more.

When the boys woke up and looked out the window, they excitedly chattered about all the things that they wanted to play in the snow – snowmen, snow castles with a slide on the outside, snowball fights, and even shovelling. We got ready for school, began shovelling the driveway, when Felix slipped and fell on the ice. At this point he sadly declared, “I don’t like wintertime!”

I know bud, I know. It felt like a real Charlie Brown moment.

The rest of the day seemed to just continue from there in a cold, dreary kind of way. I had to keep the boys home from school, my car almost got stuck in a snowbank, and so on. The evening ended with me parking myself in front of the TV, gorging on a DQ blizzard that I sent Stephen out for (bless him), in an attempt to redeem the day even just a little bit.

The following day, the sun returned and the sky boasted a gorgeous celestial blue. Fresh piles of soft snow reflected the sunlight all around and I was awakened with creativity. The boys happily played in the snow and beautiful light, eating snow off their shovels and throwing snowballs at their mama. Their joy blessed my heart and I took pictures just for the fun of it.

In every season, the world changes. The light reflects differently. There are new shadows and new colours – a renewed perspective and anticipation of all that season will bring.

The boys enjoy making “snow cones” by making a snow ball in a cup and pouring juice over top.  Notice Jack’s expression in this next photo – that’s him saying ” Where’s the juice, Mommy?” I also love that you can see my reflection in the window a little bit:)
