A hideout for adventure, a cave from which to spy

It towers over lava, it soars throughout the sky

A castle in the forest, a ship to sail the sea

Anywhere our minds create, is where we’ll always be.

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” John Muir

Our second year of camping with good friends. And we certainly got dirty! This was the rainiest summer I’ve seen in a long time but we decided to still go for it and just accept the fact that we would be drenched the entire time. We played games, blew bubbles, & splashed around in puddles. We collected beetles, searched for worms, and explored the forest for monsters and bears.

We listened to Daddy/Uncle Stephen tell campfire adventure stories and fell asleep to the sound of rain drops overhead.

We filled our bellies with smokey campfire food and filled our hearts with deepening friendship and memories of our adventures together.

Whenever we’re in Summerland, we try and make sure we take half a day to climb Giant’s Head Mountain. The views from the summit are absolutely spectacular – within sight are mountains, orchards, and the incredible Okanagan Lake. I love watching the shadows dance across the rolling hills as the clouds sweep across the sky.

The first time that Jack and Felix came along on this hike, they were about 6 months old and Stephen and I carried them in the snugli’s from the house in town to the summit and back again. Now that they’re 3 and can walk on their own (or more accurately – meander on their own), we cheated by driving most of the way and hiking the last 15 minutes or so to the very top. They were so excited to stand on the rock and the top and pretend they were on top of the world.

After our cherry picking adventure, Felix and I stopped off at The Beanery Cafe for a little lunch and coffee. We split a caramel pecan bar for dessert and Felix, being the little gentleman he is, let me eat most of his half too!
